Echoes of War

Kenya last week involved a controversy at the national high-school drama festival. A play titled Echoes of War by Butere Girls School, critical of the government, caused a stir. Police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd gathered to watch it, as the play was initially disqualified under unclear circumstances. Its parallels to recent youth protests against tax hikes drew significant attention.
The events shows a growing trend in kenyan politics where politicians are fighting to keep there political careers. The events have risen a concern on the empowerment of our creative industry in kenya. For a figure like Malala writing a plaÿ for highschool students at a musical festival many may argue it as an indication that our cinemas and films industry ain't up-to-date Malala should have been writing the play for our cinemas and the students maybe could have had a chance to watch it as a film rather than the way it played out, Malala is not to be blame but rather the government for lack of a proper creative industry empowerment in the country for it's role in achieving a Kenyan Holywood like film labels that Malala could have approved later than approaching a HighSchool.
